The Department
Established in 2005, the Department of Biosciences offers M.Sc. Microbiology and M.Sc. Biotechnology courses affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The curriculum aims to provide the students with advanced level theoretical knowledge, practical experiences and training in life sciences with particular focus on modern molecular and systems biology approaches. Apart from theoretical education, the department is committed to equip its students with research and analytical skills, making them resourceful and self sustainable. It has well equipped laboratories, with state of the art precision defined instruments, which are made available to the students to foster their plans for research. The students are also given the opportunity to acquire relevant experience through industrial or clinical attachments and through industry-based projects. As a testimony to its academic excellence, the department has recorded consistently good results in University Examinations and students have secured quality placements in Industry and academia.

Eligibility:
A candidate seeking admission to M.Sc. Microbiology/Biotechnology must have a basic degree in Biological Sciences viz, Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Biological Techniques & Specimen Preparation, Microbiology, Chemistry, MLT or any other equivalent degree recognized by MG University, with not less than CGPA of 2.00 (50%) in the Core Group (Core + Open + Complementary).

Consultancy Services
Consultancy services were rendered by the Department of Bio-Science to school students. The students of Mar Thoma Sevika Sangam UP School, Thiruvalla were trained to carry out quality analysis of water samples for potable purposes. An eco-friendly and cost-effective water filtration developed by the department was demonstrated among the inhabitants of the Kakkathuruthu colony in Tiruvalla Municipality. The students of the department also studied ‘the change in biotic and abiotic components in the post-flood scenario in Kakkathuruthu colony of Tiruvalla’. The project work again secured an A grade in the 27th National Children’s Science Congress 2019.
The department also initiated continuous awareness programmes among the inhabitants of the Kakkathuruthu colony to make them conscious of the sanitary compliances and alternatives for serving potable water. As a part of the industrial visit, final year PG students paid a visit to Amul dairy, Ahmadabad, Gujarat from 5th December, 2019 to 12th December, 2019. A cleaning programme was initiated by the Bioscience association on 18th January, 2020 in connection with the cleanliness drive.
