Economics

The Department of Economics is one of the oldest departments of the college. The department offers B. A., M. A. and Ph. D. programmes in Economics. BA Economics course was started in 1955, as one of the first undergraduate programmes of the College. The department became a postgraduate department in 1981 and in 1998, the department became a recognized research centre of Mahatma Gandhi University. As of March 2026, 68 batches of undergraduate students and 43 batches of postgraduate students passed out from the department. The research centre has also produced 15 research degree holders. Since its inception, the Department has been instrumental in the creation and dissemination of knowledge by organizing Seminars and Annual Lecture Programmes inviting reputed national and international economists. In its efforts to attain academic excellence, the Department attempts to strike an ideal balance between curricular and non-curricular activities and is on the path of lighting the candle of knowledge and wisdom to the upcoming generation.
Economics Association
The Department of Economics has a very vibrant economic association as a forum run by the students, of the students and for the students. The activities of the association make the department dynamic. Under the aegis of the association, the department offers immense opportunities for the students to bring out their talents, to test their aptitude and to polish their skills in academic as well as non-academic fields by organizing curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Through ensuring the active participation of students, the association envisages developing their qualitative attributes such as teamwork, leadership, organizing skills and event management. Being a member of such a vibrant Economic Association, a student is supposed to undergo multi-level progress, for which there is hardly any parallel elsewhere.
The Association has an executive committee that supervises its functioning. The executive committee includes a staff representative and student’s representatives from each class. A member of the department faculty officiates as The President of the association. A student member of the executive committee will be the Association Secretary.
