Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry started in 1957 with B.Sc. degree course. It became a Post Graduate Department in 1984. It is a Research Department since 2000. It offers two Post Graduate degree courses in Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. The Department celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2007. The Department has produced several eminent scientists contributing to the cause of science nationally and internationally. The department became DST-FIST sponsored Department in 2005.

The department offers B. Sc. (Chemistry), M. Sc. (Pure Chemistry), M. Sc. (Analytical Chemistry) and Ph. D. programmes.

Facilities

Department of Chemistry is a DST-FIST sponsored department since 2006. Department is well equipped with sophisticated instruments like Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscope, Atomic Absorption Spectroscope, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and UV- Visible Spectroscope. Also in Our DST-FIST laboratory we have Ultracentrifuge, Sonicator, Vacuum Coating Unit, Electrophoresis unit and PCR.

Chemistry Association

The inauguration of the Chemistry Association was held on 11th July, 2019 in the Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall of the college. Sri Jayaram V G, Assistant Scientific Officer, Directorate General of Quality Assuarance, Ministry of Defence, inaugurated the activities of the association. The inauguration of the weekly programme of the association – ‘Chem Clave’ was held on 8th August, 2019 in the College Media Centre. Dr Koshy John, Head of the Department inaugurated the programme. Final year degree students gave a presentation on ‘Evolution of Periodic Table’.

The Department organized a one-day industrial visit to the Rubber Research Institute, Kottayam on 26th November, 2019 for the UG students of the Department. As a part of celebrating the international year of chemistry, the department organized a quiz and poster designing competition for chemistry students on 18th December, 2019. The Association organised a felicitation meeting on 1st February, 2020 to honour Rank and A+ holders of the department.

An inter-departmental quiz competition was organised by the department on 1st February, 2020. The Department of Political Science won the first prize. The valedictory of the association along with farewell to the outgoing students and retiring teachers were held on 3rd March, 2020. The manuscript magazine of the association Crusible was also released on the occasion.
