Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry started in 1957 with B.Sc. degree course. It became a Post Graduate Department in 1984. It is a Research Department since 2000. It offers two Post Graduate degree courses in Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. The Department celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2007. The Department has produced several eminent scientists contributing to the cause of science nationally and internationally. The department became DST-FIST sponsored Department in 2005.

The department offers B. Sc. (Chemistry), M. Sc. (Pure Chemistry), M. Sc. (Analytical Chemistry) and Ph. D. programmes.

Facilities

Department of Chemistry is a DST-FIST sponsored department since 2006. Department is well equipped with sophisticated instruments like Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscope, Atomic Absorption Spectroscope, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and UV- Visible Spectroscope. Also in Our DST-FIST laboratory we have Ultracentrifuge, Sonicator, Vacuum Coating Unit, Electrophoresis unit and PCR.

Chemistry Association

The inauguration of the Chemistry Association was held on 11th July, 2019 in the Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall of the college. Sri Jayaram V G, Assistant Scientific Officer, Directorate General of Quality Assuarance, Ministry of Defence, inaugurated the activities of the association. The inauguration of the weekly programme of the association – ‘Chem Clave’ was held on 8th August, 2019 in the College Media Centre. Dr Koshy John, Head of the Department inaugurated the programme. Final year degree students gave a presentation on ‘Evolution of Periodic Table’.

The Department organized a one-day industrial visit to the Rubber Research Institute, Kottayam on 26th November, 2019 for the UG students of the Department. As a part of celebrating the international year of chemistry, the department organized a quiz and poster designing competition for chemistry students on 18th December, 2019. The Association organised a felicitation meeting on 1st February, 2020 to honour Rank and A+ holders of the department.

An inter-departmental quiz competition was organised by the department on 1st February, 2020. The Department of Political Science won the first prize. The valedictory of the association along with farewell to the outgoing students and retiring teachers were held on 3rd March, 2020. The manuscript magazine of the association Crusible was also released on the occasion.

1. Dr. Ajesh K. Zachariah got the Summer Research fellowship 2019 sponsored by Indian Academy of Sciences.
2. Dr. Reni George and Dr. Josmin P. Jose were selected for the FLAIR programme 2019 sponsored by the Government of Kerala.
3. Prof. Merin Sara Thomas published a book titled “Starch, Chitin and Chitosan Based Composites and Nanocomposites” in Springer, 2019.
4. Prof. Anitha George Varghese published a book chapter entitled “Cellulose Based Green Adsorbents for Pollutant Removal from Wastewater: Green Adsorbents for Pollutant Removal”.
5. Dr. Josmin P. Jose nominated as the Member IQAC M. G. University, Kottayam.
6. Dr. Josmin P. Jose  filed a patent on Designing of Superior Nanodielectric XLPE/Al2O3 Nanocomposite
7. Prof. Nebu John got best paper award in three international conferences.
8. Prof. Nebu John published 11 articles in international peer-reviewed journals.

1. Mr. Vinod R, III DC Chemistry bagged 1 st prize in the All Kerala Inter Collegiate paper presentation held at
   Assumption College Chanagancherry.
2. Ms. S. Lakshmi of III DC Chemistry availed a two-year KSCSTE student scholarship for the year 2018-19.
3. Ms. Anju Elizabeth Roy and Mr. Jomon George Joy of the Department bagged 3 rd prize in Impulses inter-departmental quiz competition conducted by The Brains Trust of the college.
