Mar Thoma Multidisciplinary eXpo: Infinity (MMXI)
Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla, organized the Mar Thoma Multidisciplinary eXpo: Infinity (MMXI) on February 28, 2025, under the auspices of the Science Forum in conjunction with National Science Day celebrations. The event was inaugurated by the college treasurer, Shri. Thomas Koshy, and aligned with the 2025 National Science Day theme, “Equipping Youth to Provide Global Leadership in Science and Innovation for a Developed India.”
The exhibition aimed to emphasize the role of science in national development, promote scientific knowledge and awareness, and prepare the new generation for leadership roles in science and innovation. The event featured not only science subjects but also social and language sections, showcasing a holistic approach to education.
Fifteen departments of Mar Thoma College participated in the exhibition, alongside prestigious institutions such as VSSC-ISRO, the Rubber Board, Central University, Kasaragod, Believers Church Medical College, Kerala Council for Historical Research, Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad, State Bank of India, and Homegrown Biotech. Various exhibits highlighted scientific innovations and their practical implications, with a special focus on emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Cyber Security. The college’s Miyawaki Forest, Zoological Museum, Herbarium, and Stellarium were among the main attractions.
The Zoology Department led a display featuring marine and freshwater fish, corals, conchs, reptiles, birds, human embryos at various stages, organs of different living beings, bones, stuffed animals, blood group determination, and movements of microorganisms.
The Chemistry Department’s “Luminaria” exhibition captivated visitors with engaging displays and experiments that explored the nature, function, and applications of chemicals in everyday life.
The English Literature section showcased diversity by presenting scenes from Shakespearean plays like Othello, Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. Characters from renowned literary works such as Cinderella, Snow White, Harry Potter, Peter Pan, and Rapunzel also made appearances, adding a creative flair to the exhibition.
The Commerce Department’s “Friday Market” initiative demonstrated entrepreneurial skills by running a student-led market every Friday.
The History Department curated exhibitions focused on Kerala’s rich history, including trade relations with China, the influence of Malabar, and insights from foreign documents. The department collaborated with Dr. M. C. Vashishth, Achutha Menon Chair Visiting Professor, Calicut University, and the Kerala Historical Research Council.
The Biosciences Department presented a simple and engaging demonstration of DNA extraction using household items like soap solution and sanitizer. The experiment illustrated fundamental scientific concepts in an accessible manner.
The Computer Applications Department offered insights into advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, computer components, and networking.
The Department of Botany exhibited medicinal plants, biodiversity, evolution, herbarium collections, and experiments on plant life processes. The department also promoted healthy eating habits by displaying salads and small grains, and showcased innovative horticultural expressions like kokedama, terrariums, and tamentama. Homegrown Biotech Nursery, in partnership with Vivagam, exhibited and marketed local and exotic fruit plants.
The Physics Department featured physics-based games, laser experiments, LED manufacturing, hologram projections, and telescope views through the Stellarium app.
The Mathematics Department engaged students with mathematical games, models to visualize mathematical concepts, and problem-solving challenges. The exhibition included an exploration of the “Königsberg Bridge” problem, highlighting its significance in the development of graph theory.
The Political Science Department and Central University, Kasaragod jointly participated in the science exhibition. It served as a platform to create awareness among the students about various sections of the Indian Constitution and human rights.
Over a thousand schoolchildren, teachers, and eight hundred college students attended, sparking interest in scientific inquiry. The MMXI exhibition successfully combined scientific learning with cultural enrichment through exhibitions, competitions, and sales from leading bookstores. The event provided a platform for students to showcase their knowledge, fostered a love for science, and enhanced the participants’ understanding of the role of science and innovation in national development.
