Suicide Prevention Day

Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla, observed Suicide Prevention Day on 23rd September 2025, in connection with World Suicide Prevention Day, which is commemorated globally on September 10. The observance aimed to raise awareness about mental health, promote empathy, and encourage collective action toward suicide prevention.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Kesiya Mary Philip, Programme Convener, who greeted the gathering and emphasized the significance of observing Suicide Prevention Day.

The session was inaugurated by Dr. Mathew Varkey T. K., Principal, Mar Thoma College, who highlighted the crucial role of mental health awareness, early identification, and timely intervention in preventing mental health crises.

A keynote session was delivered by Ms. Janet Mariyam Thomas, College Psychologist, Jeevani Centre for Mental Well-being, Government of Kerala. She focused on identifying warning signs of distress, effective coping strategies, and the importance of offering timely emotional support to those in need.

Students actively participated in interactive discussions, role plays, and awareness activities based on the global theme, “Creating Hope Through Action.” These activities encouraged open conversations about mental health and empowered students to become advocates for emotional well-being within their communities.

The event concluded with participants taking a pledge to promote empathy, challenge stigma, and work collectively to strengthen mental health awareness.

A Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. Shyni Thomas, Assistant Professor, Department of Malayalam, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the speakers, faculty, and students for their meaningful participation and contributions to the cause.
