World Environment Day Celebrations – NSS
The NSS Unit of Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla, enthusiastically celebrated the World Environment Day on June 5, 2024. The event commenced at 9:30 am with a gathering of NSS volunteers and Programme Officers, all united by a shared commitment to environmental conservation. The theme of this year’s Environment Day celebrations was ‘Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Ms. Mercy of II BA English formally welcomed the gathering. The celebrations were inaugurated by Advocate Manoj Mathew, who highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability and encouraged everyone to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives. In his speech, he emphasised the critical role that young people play in shaping a greener future, keeping away from the digital world. This event was inaugurated by planting a sapling. Dr. Reginold Varghese, the municipality Counsellor, Former Faculty and alumnus of the college, shared insights into how individuals and communities can contribute to restoring natural habitats. His address was both informative and inspiring, motivating the audience to take action. A significant highlight of the event was the donation of over 100 saplings, including native species that are well-suited to the local environment saplings by Malabar Gold and Diamonds, Tiruvalla. This initiative aimed to enhance the green cover of the campus and promote biodiversity. Their representative, Mr. Shyam, addressed the gathering, motivating the volunteers to preserve the environment. Programme Officers, Dr. P. J. Varghese, Dr. Sreelatha P. V. and Ms. Anitha George Varghese, shared their insights on the significance of the day and encouraged the volunteers to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sreelatha P. V., Programme Officer. The World Environment Day celebrations at Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla, were a resounding success marked by active participation and a collective spirit of environmental stewardship. The NSS Unit’s efforts to organise such a comprehensive program were widely appreciated, and the event succeeded in fostering a deeper understanding and commitment towards environmental conservation among all attendees.
