ആറിനഴകായ് പച്ചത്തുരുത്ത് – AN ECO-RESTORATION PROGRAMME
On 2nd October 2024 (Gandhi Jayanthi), The Botany Association of Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla, Kallooppara Agricultural Producers & Promoters Association (KAPPA) and Kallooppara Grama Panchayat (LSG) jointly organized an Eco-Restoration program called ‘Aarinazhakayi pachathuruthu’ on the banks of Manimala river at Karuthavadasherikadavu in Kallooppara Grama Panchayat. The program was inaugurated by honorable MP of Pathanamthittta LAC, Adv. Anto Antony. Students and Teachers of the Department of Botany, Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla planted more than 150 plant saplings (20 species) of riparian trees on the river bank, at the specified location. Mr. Renosh Tom Varghese K. (Head of the Department of Botany), Dr. Jacob Thomas (President, Botany Association), Ms. Noorfathima (Secretary, Botany Association), Mr. Adhil Thaha (Botany Association Joint Secretary) along with several other student volunteers from the Department of Botany lead the program. The bare land selected for the project is envisioned to be transformed into an eco-park area in the near future. Since the planted saplings belong to indigenous riparian flora, they inherently have the capacity to survive floods and thus they tend to withstand such kinds of natural calamities. The drastic change in climate and environment is becoming more evident year by year; impacts of such phenomena can be controlled, reduced or counteracted by these kinds of nature conservation activities. The program also envisages to convey a message to the younger generation regarding the necessity to protect ecosystem, nature and natural resources for a sustainable future. The Department of Botany, Mar Thoma College, Tiruvalla has a commitment to the Nation, Nature and the Natives of this land and therefore will take every steps possible to make this project a productive one.
