Clubs & Forums

The college has a number of forums, clubs and such other assemblies which help students and teachers to sharpen their abilities and to build capacities in various aspects life skills.

Over all development of the personality is the prime focus in all these endeavors.

Though there are a number of forums and clubs functioning on the campus, this website attempts to highlight just a few of them.

Christian Associations

Mar Thoma Students’ Association

Mar Thoma Students Conference is the annual meeting of the college/university level students of the Mar Thoma Church. Mar Thoma Students’ Association was established as a unit of the Conference in its Centenary year.

Mar Thoma College Christian Union / Student Christian Movement of India

Mar Thoma College Christian Union is open to all Christian Students and members of the staff of the college. It seeks to co-operate with all the Christian activities in the college. It is affiliated to the Student Christian Movement of India. It is hoped that the union functioning as a part of the world-wide Student Christian Movement, will enable its members to have a wider vision, to grow in the spirit of Christian Unity and to have an all-round development in Christian life. Morning worship, Church related Service Programmes, Camps etc. are some of the activities conducted by the SCM in the college.

Union of Evangelical Students of India

A unit of the Union of Evangelical Students of India (UESI) functions in the campus. EU holds weekly meetings and annual retreats to fulfill the spiritual needs of the youth.

Subject Associations

Ten Subject Associations and one Post Graduate Association function actively on the campus. A member of faculty is nominated by the respective department as the president of the subject association. These associations arrange special meetings, seminars, lectures and competitions every year. The associations functions for the all round development of the students.

Science Forum

The Science Forum in the College functions effectively. Regular programmes of the Science Forum include talks on science matters, quiz competitions, seminars etc. Science Forum organizes special events in connection with National Science Day.

National Service Scheme

A unit of National Service Scheme has been functioning in the College since 1971. It is a voluntary organization designed to create community consciousness in the students and to channelise their energy and enthusiasm into constructive paths. Presently the College has two units of National Service Scheme with a membership of about 300 students. The students participate in a series of community development projects including, 10 day work camp arranged every year during Christmas holidays. The NSS volunteers carry out regular campus beautification programmes, arrange blood donation, and participate in community development schemes in the locality. A Bonus of 15 marks for the Degree Course and 5 marks for PG Course shall be awarded to NSS Candidate at the time of admission.

National Cadet Corps

NCC functions in the College to develop character, comradeship, ideal service, leadership traits and to provide service training to young men and women. There are about 100 Cadets in the NCC unit of the College. Application for enrolment will be called for by the Officer-Commanding the unit at the beginning of each academic year. The cadets enrolled will undergo a minimum of 4 hours of training per week and attend an annual training camp of 14 days duration. Cadets who have the required attendance to their credit and have shown sufficient progress can appear for B and C Certificate Examinations conducted by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, at the end of the first and the third years of training respectively. Cadets are under no obligation to undertake active service but those cadets who have passed B and C certificate examinations will be given preference for joining the armed forces. The college can now boast of a special unit comprising of women cadets also. Application forms for enrolment can be had from the NCC Office. Bonus marks are awarded to NCC Candidate at the time of admission.

The Brains Trust

The Brains Trust, one of the most prestigious organizations of the college, has been functioning since 1957. Its membership is restricted to 75 students who are selected on the basis of a rigorous written test and interview. The ultimate object of the Trust is the comprehensive and harmonious development of the personality of students so that they can provide effective leadership in all walks of life. It has also been envisaged as a forum for discussing issues of national and international significance. In order to develop leadership skills among students, the Trust provides training in public speaking, debating, creative writing and other such activities. It also equips students for competitive exams, academic and cultural competitions etc. The Trust also has various functional wings like the Debating Forum, Quiz Club, Arts Club etc. A Leadership Training Camp, lasting for three days, is held every year for the members of the Trust.

Eminent personalities from different walks of life have addressed the Trust on various occasions in its history. The list of luminaries who have addressed the Trust in the past years include Sri. Rajaji, Sri. Fakrudheen Ali Ahammed, Sri. V V Giri, Smt. Indira Gandhi, Dr. Stanley Jones, Dr. John Mathai, Sri. Pattom Thanu Pillai, Dr. P C Alexander and so on.

The Trust is in fact widely viewed as the most acclaimed organizations of its kind. It has played a very decisive role in shaping the social and intellectual life of many students in the past and aspires to do the same in the future.

Women’s Cell

The Women’s Cell, of which all the women students of the college are members, provides opportunities to develop the talents of the members. It is a forum for cultural activities which highlights the issues of common concern of the women students. The annual ‘Women’s Day’ organized by the Cell offers an occasion for the women student’s to express their artistic talents.

Astronomy Club

The Astronomy Club was started in the College with the aim to cultivate research interest among the students in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. Regular lecturers and studies are being conducted. The club uses a 150 mm astronomical telescope for observations. The telescope was constructed at Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune by our students. Extension activity of the Club in the recent years include allowing the school students and general public to observe Mars as the planet came to its closest trajectory near to earth in the past 20,000 years. The telescope was made available to the public for 3 nights and a lot of people made use of the opportunity. Seminars and Lecturers were conducted using LCD projectors, on various topics viz. Red Shift, Mars, Galaxies and General Theory of Relativity. Among the dignitaries who addressed the students include eminent scientists Prof. Jayant Narlikar, Prof. Ajit Kembhave and Prof. Naresh Daddich.

Parent Teacher Association

The college has a well organized Parent-Teacher Association with a constitution of its own. The PTA usually meets twice a year. In addition to general P.T.A, the class P.T.A.s also function effectively. The college gets much of its financial support through contribution raised by the Association from time to time.

Medical Club

Medical Club is one of the new clubs started for the benefit of the students. Under the auspices of the Club, lectures on various aspects of health-maintenance, Medical Camps, Blood group Detection Camp etc. are periodically arranged.

Eco Club

The Eco Club was set up to create among the students an awareness about the importance of protecting our environment. The club enlists student participation in maintaining a clean and healthy campus by planting more trees, holding seminars on topics related to current environmental problems and to conduct study tours to eco-tourism centers. The club, which has about 60 student members strives to develop love of nature and adventure and to instill awareness of the environment in the college community. The recent activities of the club include planting and nurturing of about 40-50 indigenous forest trees and medicinal plants on the campus, labeling of plants etc. The club has also arranged a nature camp and a trip to the Nehru Planetarium in Trivandrum and the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary and other places of interest to students. They have also screened nature-related video cassettes and arranged drawing and painting competitions to instill environmental consciousness among students.

Tourism Club

The Tourism Club aims at generating more attention on tourism and its advantages, creating awareness about the socio-economic relevance of tourism for the development of the state, promoting interest in travel which engenders national integration and exploring potential tourist spots in Kerala. The Club conducts trucking, tourism camp, study tour etc.

Best Arts

The Best Arts is a forum in which the best artists of the college become members. Students talented in singing, dancing, acting, painting, writing etc. are given special training to develop their skills. They get a number of opportunities to perform and to take part in Youth Festivals including chances on Radio and Television.

Research Forum

‘Research Forum’ functions in the college with a view to enhance research temperament among the teachers and to conduct research oriented academic programmes.

Planning Forum

The Planning Forum is a very active co-curricular organization of the College consisting of students and teachers. The primary objective of the Forum is to critically analyze the socio-economic issues, both national and international. It also undertake case studies and gathers empirical information/data focusing on issues affecting the community surrounding the College. Lectures, symposia, workshops etc. are also organized by the Forum.

Community Extension Cell

The Cell offers various programmes and aimed at the uplift of the community around. The Cell conducts a nursery school attached to the Women’s Hostel, offers pre-school education to the poor children of the locality. Tailoring classes are also organized for the poor young women of the locality in the hall adjacent to the nursery. The Cell has also adopted a village. Various programmes have been chalked out for its all round development. Students also visit orphanages and poor homes, and offer assistance to the needy and the destitute. Under the auspices of the Cell, remedial teaching is also conducted for the less privileged children of the society.

Women Empowerment Cell (Cell for the Prevention of Harassment Against Women)

The Women Empowerment Cell has the authority to exercise statutory powers connected with empowerment of women in the college. The Cell organises counselling and training programmes for the empowerment of women. It also organises programmes of general nature and/or competitions for the promotion of gender justice. The Cell also supervises amenities for women in the college.

SC/ST Cell

The SC/ST cell seeks to take care of issues relating to the students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and the redressal of their grievances.

ADIC

Alcohol and Drug Information Center (ADIC) functions under the directions of the District Collector. It creates an awareness about the evil effects of drug and drinks among the students by organizing a series of conscientisation programmes such as seminars, exhibitions, role plays etc.
